Telecommuters
Telecommuting opportunities are on the rise every day. It refers to an employment type where you can work from home or any other location of your preference, and communicate with the office or your employer via telephone calls, fax messages, email messages or any other communication method facilitated by technology. As it may have already occurred to you, telecommuters have the best life. They have the luxury of working according to the hours they want, and can do so in the comforts of their own home. What would you not do for a life like this?
Though the life of a telecommuter is envied upon, telecommuting does have its disadvantages. Since there is no set working time for telecommuters, they could end up being less efficient than those working normal working hours. The opposite of this is also possible - since there is no specific time allocated to work, workaholic telecommuters may work 24hours a day leading them to health and stress related problems. Also working from home could be a lonely job sometimes. The feeling of belonging to the company will also be very low, which means they will probably not be working to the best of their abilities. Always open to distractions could be another reason they do not work to their best capability. Lastly, telecommuters do not have many chances to career promotions.
That being said, telecommuting also has its advantages. As said above, there is the luxury of working at your own house in your own time. They can afford time for their family as well as their favorite leisure activities. Second, working at home also means that telecommuters do not bear any transportation costs which again mean that they get more value for the work they do. Third, since telecommuting does not require any travel between the household and the workplace, it reduces noise and air pollution. Finally, telecommuters sometimes hold more than one telecommuting position allowing them to generate more income than the traditional workers.
There are many things expected out of a telecommuter. The crucial one would be loyalty and honesty towards their employers. They should be able to take on as much work as possible to keep their end of the bargain. Being dishonest or untrustworthy is reason enough to get fired from the job. Once this trust is damaged nothing can be said or done to rebuild it. Because of this the relationship between the telecommuter and employer comes with great responsibilities.
